A week-long sailing trip in Masuria - three routes for 7 days
A week-long sailing trip in Masuria is a wonderful way to experience the region in all its variety, from lively harbours and popular resort towns to quiet lakeside moorings and secluded bays. Seven days gives you time to see a great deal, but each day should still be planned around the weather, the crew's experience and the amount of time you actually want to spend under way.
Your route will depend on the conditions, the type of boat and the pace you prefer. A trip aboard a sailing yacht will feel different from one aboard a motorboat. Treat the three itineraries below as practical starting points that you can adapt to your own plans rather than rigid schedules.
All three routes begin and end at our home harbour, Stranda in Giżycko.
Three ideas for a 7-day cruise in Masuria
The first route heads north, the second explores the southern Great Masurian Lakes, and the third is designed mainly for crews looking for peace, nature and less crowded waters.
If you have not yet chosen a boat, browse our fleet and match the yacht to your intended route. If nobody in your crew holds a sailing licence, take a look at our no-licence charter options.
1. Northern Masuria – quiet stops and well-equipped marinas
Giżycko – Stranda
Your cruise begins at our home harbour, Stranda. If you collect the yacht early enough and the weather is favourable, you can spend the first night at the informal lakeside mooring at Zimny Kąt.
Sztynort
A legendary Masurian harbour, often described as a village for sailors. The marina has full facilities, a grocery shop and several good places to eat, including Baba Pruska and the Córka Rybaka fish bar, well known among local crews.
Zwierzyniecki Róg
Originally a campsite, this quiet place gradually opened its shoreline to sailors as well. It now offers jetties, basic facilities and space for a barbecue or campfire.
Ognisty Ptak
A smaller, fully serviced marina beside a hotel. Guests can use the hotel's restaurants and spa, and the site is well suited to families with children. There is also a grocery shop in nearby Ogonki.
U Melnika – Harsz
An atmospheric mooring with a jetty, best visited only in suitable conditions. We strongly advise against stopping here in a westerly wind of force 3 or more on the Beaufort scale, because the eastern shore of Lake Dargin can then become very dangerous.
Lake Dobskie – a quiet zone
Lake Dobskie is covered by a quiet-zone restriction, so petrol and diesel engines and sound signals must not be used here. Possible overnight stops include the Rajcocha shore and Dziewiszewski Róg.
Sztynort
This is the final stop before returning to Stranda. It is worth refuelling here before the busy Friday afternoon period, when long queues often form at waterside fuel stations during the season.
Other places to stop in northern Masuria
If you have more time or want to adjust the itinerary, northern Masuria offers many more places for an overnight stay or a break ashore.
Harbours in northern Masuria:
- Węgorzewo – EkoMarina, Keja, ZHP and Mamry
- Piękny Brzeg
- Przystań Nautica
- Port 69
- Łabędzi Ostrów
Smaller marinas in northern Masuria:
- Stanica Wodna Kietlice
- Skłodowo
- Zdorkowo
Wild mooring spots in northern Masuria:
- SunBila Pieczarki
- Roganty
- the beach at Radzieje
2. Southern Masuria – harbours, lakeside moorings and popular towns
Giżycko – Stranda
This is where the cruise begins. If you would like a relaxed start to the week, you can spend Saturday evening at Stranda harbour. The harbour offers live music, pizza, grilled dishes and its own craft beer.
Leśna Keja
A pleasant informal mooring with a beautiful view and basic facilities. There is also a campfire area, making this a good place for a quiet evening by the water.
Marina Górkło
After a quieter period, this harbour is coming back to life and becoming an increasingly popular place to moor. It has full facilities and a well-regarded tavern, and it makes a convenient overnight stop before continuing through the canals.
Ryn
Ryn offers several places to moor, including the EkoMarina. The harbour overlooks the town, while the nearby promenade has several recommended places to eat. There is also a fuel station, so this is a useful place to top up the tank.
Zatoka Skonał
In our view, this is one of the most beautiful bays on this part of the trail. It is a good alternative to another large harbour when you would rather spend a peaceful evening closer to nature.
Mikołajki
A lively tourist town with plenty of restaurants, shops and harbours to choose from. If you would like some urban attractions during the cruise, Mikołajki is a natural stop along the route.
Giżycko
The return to Giżycko is the longest leg of this itinerary. We recommend setting off in the morning and reaching Stranda on Friday afternoon, leaving enough time to prepare the yacht for handover.
Route variation – Lake Śniardwy
If you can devote one day to an additional leg, skip one of the stops above and sail to Marina Śniardwy. It offers beautiful sunsets, a pleasant beach and a tavern serving good food.
Take particular care on Lake Śniardwy: stay within the marked navigation channel. The lake is shallow and contains numerous stones and submerged boulders.
Other places to stop in southern Masuria
Like the northern lakes, southern Masuria offers plenty of scope for changing the route as you go.
Harbours in southern Masuria:
- AZS Wilkasy
- Hotel Tajty
- Zielona Zatoka
- Marina Lester Club
- Port Bogaczewo
- Stare Sady
Smaller marinas in southern Masuria:
- Rybaczówka
- Sun Bila
- Zielony Gaj
- Zanzibar
- Kula campsite
Wild mooring spots in southern Masuria:
- Lake Tajty – with many quiet places to moor away from a marina
- Skorupki
- Zatoka Mrówki
3. Southern Masuria – a quieter route close to nature
This itinerary is intended mainly for sailors who want to avoid the busiest places and spend more of their week close to nature. Its aim is to reach Lake Nidzkie and explore a quieter side of Masuria. It works for both sailing yachts and motorboats.
Giżycko – Stranda
If the collection time and conditions allow, you can leave soon after taking over the yacht, pass through the canals and moor at AZS Wilkasy.
SunPort – Stare Sady
From Giżycko, head directly towards Lake Tałty and Stare Sady. SunPort is a comfortable place to rest after the passage from Giżycko and prepare for the next stages of the journey south.
Ruciane-Nida
In Ruciane-Nida, you can moor at Port Faryj or Pod Dębem. Both harbours have full facilities, and it is worth buying provisions here before continuing for the next few days.
Ruciane-Nida is also home to the Guzianka lock, which takes boats through to Lake Nidzkie.
Lake Nidzkie – a quiet zone
Farther south beyond Port Pod Dębem, the protected part of Lake Nidzkie is subject to a ban on petrol and diesel engines. This is where the most natural part of the route begins: no combustion engine, but plenty of opportunity for peaceful sailing and overnight stops away from the busiest places.
We will not prescribe the rest of this route in detail. This is the part to explore independently, at your own pace, while enjoying a quieter side of Masuria.
Plan the return so that you reach Stranda harbour on Friday afternoon or, at the latest, on Saturday morning, with enough time to prepare the yacht for handover.
These routes are suggestions, not fixed schedules. Both northern and southern Masuria are worth exploring. Before you arrive, review the places above and adjust the route to your expectations, experience and preferred amount of sailing time. You will find more practical planning advice in our charter guide.
Sail through Masuria with respect for nature
Masuria is more than a sailing trail, a network of harbours and a collection of popular towns. It is first and foremost a landscape of lakes, forests and wildlife, and during a cruise we are guests in that landscape.
Leave every stop tidy and take all rubbish with you. Use harbour pump-out facilities and never discharge chemicals into the lakes. A washing-up liquid labelled “bio” is not necessarily safe for freshwater ecosystems. Often, water and a small amount of gentle potassium soap are enough for washing; there are plenty of places along the trail where you can shower or wash dishes properly. Do not feed ducks or other wild birds with bread, as it harms their health. During summer they can readily find natural food.
If you spend the night at a wild mooring, leave it exactly as you would hope to find it. Peace, clean water and undisturbed nature are what make crews want to return to Masuria year after year.
Sail responsibly and help keep Masuria beautiful for your own crew and for everyone who arrives after you.
